Abstract

The dysregulation of adipokines is closely associated with the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. A recently proposed adipokine i.e., Retinol-binding protein-4 (RBP4), is found to provide a connecting link between insulin resistance and obesity. Interestingly, the interaction between vitamin A and iron status has also been observed in a few shreds of evidence. For instance, vitamin A deficiency may result in impairment of iron metabolism and may aggravate anemia. Here, the present review is designed to summarize the up-to-date knowledge on RBP4’s role in obesity, development of insulin resistance, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus by findings of previous studies and investigate the crucial possible outcome of the relationship between RBP4 and iron status in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients, most importantly in humans.
