Psychological safety in simulation

Simulation-based training has emerged as one of the key education strategies in contemporary practice, allowing an immersive educational experience that recreates aspects of practice scenarios (Cant and Cooper, 2010). Importantly, simulations provide a level of realism (fidelity) that allow training relevant to practice, while providing a safe environment free from the risk of patient injury or harm (Fey et al., 2014). The construction of a psychologically safe simulation environment is challenging, and no single method may be expected to deliver this outcome. The use of pre-briefing, effective leadership, and socially-focused models of teamworking and experiential reflection should be considered in combination to support psychological safety throughout the session.
