Experience of family empowerment in community midwifery care practices: A qualitative phenomenological study

Family empowerment is a key approach in community midwifery that positions families as active partners in supporting maternal health. Family involvement in decision-making, utilization of antenatal care (ANC) services, emotional support, and childbirth preparation are important factors in the success of midwifery care during pregnancy. Various community midwifery programs have shown that family empowerment can improve family knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors in supporting maternal and fetal health. The purpose of this study was to explore families' experiences of family empowerment during midwifery care practices within the community. The research method used a qualitative phenomenological approach. Informants consisted of 12 pregnant women, 8 husbands, 4 community midwives, 5 health cadres, and 6 family members from February to April 2026. In-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted, recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke. The results found six main themes: increased family knowledge about pregnancy, experiences of emotional support during pregnancy, family involvement in health decision-making, experiences of ANC assistance, family partnerships with community midwives, and family preparedness for childbirth. Family empowerment experiences have a positive impact on midwifery care practices through increased health literacy, emotional support, family involvement, and childbirth preparedness.
